Hub in Project

An ambitious consortium of 8 European Cities, including Lisbon, Angoulême, Belfast, Brasov, Genoa, Nicosia, Ptuj and Utrecht, are preparing an application for Horizon 2020 funding: “Transforming historic urban areas and/or cultural landscapes into hubs of entrepreneurship and social and cultural integration” – HUB-IN.

The overall objective of the HUB-IN project is to develop an overarching framework on how to boost the regeneration, innovation and entrepreneurship in historic urban areas and landscapes, by building and demonstrating a comprehensive set of integrated tools and methods that can be applied across Europe’s historic areas.

The project will start by establishing a network of Innovation and Entrepreneurship HUBs in the above designated cities, which will be upscaled to a wider Network of Historic Urban Areas (HUA’s). The cooperation and support of ‘follower’ cities is therefore essential for the success of the project along with alliances and partnerships with national and international stakeholders and other international networks.

Our proposal is currently in development, ahead of the 4th September deadline, but we are already confident that we will develop genuinely innovative and integrated solutions to address the well-know problems of our historic urban areas and landscapes.

Through the proposal we have identified two desired outcomes. First, there is potential to establish innovative and secure financing arrangements which will give life to demonstrator projects of this nature beyond the initial injection of European Commission funding. Second, we have engaged Heritage Europe(European Association of Historic Towns and Regions) as partner so we can genuinely transfer and translate the business cases, models and expertise acquired across the project to other cities across the European Union.

As part of the project, we will also set up a knowledge sharing structure – the Hub-In Academy. Within the HUB-IN Academy activities we aim to organize mentorship sessions and summer school programmes during the four years project lifetime, in close collaboration with private companies, cities and academic institutions with the ability to promote innovation.

We, the consortium behind project, are engaging with Cities and Organizations that would be interested in supporting the project activities and help us on transforming of our territories and improve inclusion, economic growth and quality of life.

We would therefore be honoured if your City/Organisation would like to join us in this process.

How to participate?

If your City/Organisation wants to join the City Network, please fill in the attached Letter of Support and return it signed (and stamped) to: b.smith@historic-towns.org

Best regards, and hoping for your support,

Brian Smith, Secretary General Heritage Europe (EAHTR)
