Icherisheher

 

“Icherisheher” (the Walled city of Baku) is the ancient historical core of today's Baku city. The Walled City of Baku with Shirvanshahs’ Palace and Maiden Tower is a fabulous architectural ensemble with unique urban planning system and outstanding examples of a traditional human settlement and usage of land, which dates back to ancient times and is some sort of "a chronicle in stone" of consequently Zoroastrian, Sassanian, Arabic, Persian, Shirvani, Ottoman and Russian periods in its cultural continuity from old times up to day. Icherisheher (the Walled City of Baku) with the Shirvanshahs’ Palace and Maiden Tower was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. The name of the historical center of Baku, Icherisheher literally means Inner City, and located in downown Baku, the capital of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In 2005, the Administration of State Historical-Architectural Reserve “Icherisheher” was established under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan in order to implement an integrated state policy on long-term protection and conservation of this historical site as well as its promotion as Baku’s main touristic destination.

 

The unique historical sites and wide range of tourism options in Icherisheher have turned this ancient city into one of the most attractive destinations for tourists visiting Azerbaijan. The area of Icherisheher is 22 hectares and encompasses hundreds of historical sites – 3 of which are monuments of universal value. There are over 20 hotels functioning in the site today, several museums, galleries, theatres, more than one hundred small businesses - shops and restaurants at the disposal of residents and visitors to this ancient city. The High Level Strategy envisages rich cultural life in the Old City as a part of the effort to turn the site into the cultural destination of the world class. Each year, Icherisheher hosts such national and international events as Novruz Holiday, Grape Harvest festival and “Maiden Tower” International Art Festival. The diverse architecture of Icherisheher demonstrates the workmanship of skilled architects and craftsmen and takes us back in time to the ancient and medieval ages .There is a museum complex in Icherisheher comprised of «Maiden Tower», «the Palace of the Shirvanshahs», the Museum of Archeological and Ethnography Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Museum of Miniature Books, the House museum of Kamil Aliyev, and the House museum of Vagif Mustafazade.
