The Heritage Council is a public body working in the public interest, its priorities are to support jobs, education and heritage tourism in local communities. The Heritage Council complements but importantly builds on the work of other state heritage bodies which have primary responsibility for the care of property in state ownership and the designation of protected areas.

Walled towns and the Old Dutch Waterline

Walled towns played a crucial part in a 17th century defense system whereby water was used to stop the enemy from advancing. Large sections of land were flooded. Just 40 cm of water was enough to stop the enemy. Too much to try and wade through with heavy military equipment and not sufficient to use boats.

A disastrous moment in Dutch history, the year 1672

In 1672 French troops marched west in the direction of Amsterdam. They had to be stopped and Holland decided to use water as a weapon. There was no time to think and a large section of land  was rapidly submerged in water by (more or less) controlled flooding. It ran from the walled town of Muiden in the north, to the walled town of Gorinchem with castle Loevestein in the south. Head of the Dutch army was the young Prince Willem III and he and his men stood their ground. In the end the French gave up and retreated. The waterline had worked, Holland was saved. But what was left behind was a desolate country. It had been a disastrous year.

Heritage

Even three hundred and fifty years later the Old Dutch Waterline is still much in place. It is not easily recognized as it lies hidden in the countryside. The full extension comes only to life when put into action and the land is flooded. With its 11 walled towns (some better preserved than others) and attractive countryside it offers excellent opportunities for recreation and tourism. The Old Dutch Waterline should be treasured and therefore protected by means of a monumental status. The Green Heart Foundation appointed  itself curator of the Old Dutch Waterline and has published a number of books on the subject. With exhibitions, cultural events, re-enactments and a video, the foundation tries to bring this military monument to the attention of the general public and create awareness with the politicians so that it will be saved for future generations.

The Euregional Historic Centre is a historical organization in Sittard-Geleen (95.000 inhabitants). Sittard is a very old city in the province of Limburg, in the south of the Netherlands. The oldest traces of permanent occupation date back to the linear ceramics. The city still has about ¾ of its 14th century rampart, the oldest existing houses date from the beginning of the 16th century..

The Euregional Historic Centre’s mission is to preserve, manage, access and provision primary and secondary archival sources of the municipality of Sittard-Geleen and its surrounding municipalities Stein, Beek and Schinnen, but also contextual material of the surrounding Euregion (Kreis Heinsberg and Flemisch Limburg Maasland). We also keep archives of social organizations such as parishes and foundations, castles and families who have been important for the identity of the town and region. This is done from a legislative but also cultural-historical-social obligation. Digitization is very strong, with 6 million pageviews per year. The EHC works with reliable and sustainable systems of information preservation and is for example associate partner of V-Must.net. Cooperation is our strength and thereby we transcend boundaries where possible. Boundaries between municipalities example, between gouvernemental and voluntary organizations, and between countries.
